Friday Practices

New thread cause last one was too long.
Now then, as most of you know, practice is now from 5:30 to whenever on fridays. If I can't make it to a practice, I will try to find a way to let you all know what's going on. There will usually be food but i can't promise it every time. There is also the chance that I may end practice early on a particular day; I will let you know if this is the case.

Things that I like to practice:

-Kenjutsu (kendo and iaido drills)
-tantojutsu (knife fighting)
-Taijutsu (mostly aikido, atemi-waza, and small amounts of what little judo i know)
-naginata
-Sojutsu (japanese spear)
-Jojustu
-Kyujutsu (the little bit of japanese archery i know)
-Shurikenjustu (me pretending i know how to throw a shuriken)
-General skills that involve these traditions but don't necessarily stem from them for application in boffer fighting, i.e. kunai dodging

I may focus entire practices on just one of these topics. If I do more than one, it will never be more than three topics per practice.

Things I recommend you bring:

-Boffer weapons
-some kind of jacket or gi top for when we do jujutsu(itchy grass)
-bokken

things you will eventually be expected to bring:

-iaito (drawing sword, must be checked for safety by me)
-belt for your iaito
-jo staff
-wooden tanto

with me you will learn to count in japanese as well as proper dojo etiquette. I won't run my class as strict as a real dojo but my hope is that I won't have to. We're all training for the same reasons: to improve our skills and bring culture into our boffer sport. Osu!

i'll be there tomorrow but i wont stay the entire time mainly because its my uncles birthday....

I'm a try to make it out there myself if i don't have to baby sit. (my ankles fine, no worries.)

Glossary

Targets:

Men- Head or face

Shomen- top of the head or forehead area

Yokomen- Side of head

Kote- wrists

Do- torso


Cuts:

Shomen giri- the down cut. the forehead is the expected target.

Yoko giri- see suihe giri

Kesa giri- Diagonal down cut. kesa is usually done away from dominant leg.

Kiri age- Diagonal upward cut

Suihe giri- horizontal cut.

Gyaku Kesa- opposite diagonal cut. Gyaku kesa is done towards the dominant leg.

Gyaku kiri age- opposite upward diagonal.

so depending on how many people i get at this next one (friday the 19th of november) i may put these practices on hiatus. if you can't make it, please let me know before 4:00pm.

Well thanks to the newbies coming out last friday, practices are still a go. I would like to state however that this friday (the day after thanksgiving) is a tentative practice. assume its a go until i say otherwise, and I promise to let everyone know the minute the plan changes with enough time to let people make new plans.

On a side note, emperor Kyle may be gracing us with his presence. hopefully i'll see you guys out there! In the case that I can't make it out,Emperor Kyle will be heading up the practice.

we don't usually have the clan swords available at my practices but if you bring a bokken, that's fine.
