Kenjutsu, Kendo and other traditional weapons-play excersises will be led in the same manner as a traditional japanese dojo. We won't be running it military style but we will expect you to show proper respect to etiquette. It's not comlicated and the major points are listed below. We will be teaching it during the kenjutsu meets so that you may get used to it. Ask Tino or Myself if you have any questions.

1. When entering or leaving the dojo, it is proper to bow in the direction of the kamiza, or the front of the dojo. You should also bow when entering or leaving the mat.
*note - Satsu doesn't have these things but if anyone from Satsu decides to join a Martial Arts school know that it is EXTREMELY disrespectful to not follow this first rule.

3. At the start of class the students will line up, seated, facing the instructor and bow saying "Onegai Shimasu"
*note - essentially means 'please train with me'
for Satsu the instructors will also say this with the students, although you may not see this in normal dojos.

4. Always bow to your partner before beginning an excersise

5. No shoes on the mat.
*note - we don't really have a mat but we may ask you to take your shoes for the sake of learning certain things

6. Be on time for class. If you do happen to arrive late, sit quietly in seiza on the edge of the mat until the instructor grants permission to join practice.
*note - "seiza" is the proper seated position while in a japanese dojo. We will teach this to you if you don't know what it is

7. If you should have to leave the mat or dojo for any reason during class, approach the instructor and ask permission. If you return after sit quietly in seiza on the edge of the mat until the instructor grants permission to rejoin practice.
*note - you don't need our permission but please don't simply walk away from practice without saying anything.

8. Avoid sitting on the mat with your back to the the kamiza or the sensei. Also, do not lean against the walls or sit with your legs stretched out. (Either sit in seiza or cross- legged.)
*note - we do not have sensei in Satsu, only senpai (means upper-classman or mentor). However the rule still applies. Face the instructor when seated

9. Remove watches, rings and other jewelry before practice.
*note - this is for you own safety and for the safety of these objects. If you don't want to risk breaking something, don't wear it to practice. This also applies to glasses. Wear contacts if you have them or try to find goggles to wear over your glasses if you can. Everyone will do their best to avoid breaking your things, however if you wear them during a high activity event like this and they break it is no-ones fault but your own.

10. Do not bring food, gum, or beverages with you into the dojo.
*note - we're not trying to kill you out here. there will be time for eating and drinking but please don't eat while the instructor is trying to teach

11. It is proper to carry equipment facing up and behind you arm on the right side of the body when not engaging in specific excersises as long as you are in the dojo.
*note - this includes boffer weapons, bokken, drawing swords, shinai, etc.
The reason for this is that swords are drawn from the left side of the body toward the right. Weapons are held sheathed and sometimes peace-tied on the opposite side of the body with the hilt pointing straight down and the bladed edge facing you. This makes it impossible to draw a weapon quickly and shows peaceable intentions.

12. Carry out the directives of the instructor PROMPTLY. Do not keep the rest of the class waiting for you.

13. Do not engage in needles rough-housing or contests of strength during class.

14. Keep your training uniform clean, in good shape, and free of offensive odors.

15. At the conclusion of a class the instructor will lead a kneeling bow and everyone will state "Domo Arigato Gozaimasu"
*note - you are thanking the instructor AND all of your peers for helping you train

16. Remember that you are here to learn, and not to gratify your ego. An attitude of receptivity and humility is therefore advised.
Preserve common-sense standards of decency and respect at all times.
*note - seriously. we will be enforcing these. If you're doing something that interferes with others ability to learn you will be running a gasser
*another note - If you are asked to run a gasser, sit quietly in seiza on the edge of the mat when you return until the instructor grants permission to rejoin practice. If you don't you'll be running another gasser.

At the following website you can find the official etiquette for Aikido dojos, which is fairly standard for any Japanese style dojo you may visit

http://www.shobu.org/docs/shobu_kids_etiquette.pdf

At the following website you will find a list of common terms used in japanese style dojos. It is not necessary to learn all of them for Satsu, however, you are likely to hear the intsructor use at least some of them frequently. If you'd like to understand what we're saying

in regards to rule number 7, you don't have to ask for permission but it looks rude if you just leave so please let us know that you're leaving and it mention why.

Ok since Kyle wants us to be as Jap as possible AND I NEED Satsubatsu Gumi to be a shining example at the imperial stance training at campout, I'm going to start enforcing this again at my practices. remember guys, gassers are not the worst things we could hand out. I won't give gassers for tardiness, only for what i view to be blatant disrespect. please see above for what i would consider respectful.
